THE DRIVEN ONE

Becoming, by Michelle Obama

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Empowering & Inspiring

What is this book about?

Becoming is the memoir of one of the most influential women in the world. From her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as a busy working mom, and finally, her time spent at the world’s most famous address, you’ll know everything that led Michelle Obama to become who she is now.

My review in short

As the first African-American to become the First Lady of the United States of America, I knew she would teach me many lessons thanks to this book. But in the end, her childhood and the things she did before meeting Barack Obama are the stories that fascinated me the most. This book is full of resilience and ambition. It has the potential of empowering all the little girls in the world, or really any reader.

THE FEMINIST

We Should All Be Feminists, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Personal & Powerful

What is this book about?

We Should All Be Feminists is a short essay written by the Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in which she explains her definition of feminism.

My review in short

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie clearly describes how negatively perceived being a feminist is. Everybody could read this book and understand what feminism really is about. We Should All Be Feminists is more of an introduction to the topic than a book that will answer all their questions, but it’ll take them only 30mn to read it and I really think everyone should!

THE SARCASTIC ONE

This Is Going To Hurt, by Adam Kay

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Funny & Engaged

What is this book about?

This is going to hurt is the diary of a junior doctor, full of funny anecdotes and awkward stories about what happened to him during his short career at the NHS.

My review in short

The awkwardness level of this book actually makes it funny. Plus, the person who will read it will definitely learn a lot about the NHS. And he/she will also hope never to have to set foot in a hospital ever again.

THE RISK-TAKER

Going Dark, by Julia Ebner

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Fascinating & Eye-opening

What is this book about?

Going Dark: The secret social lives of extremists explores Julia Ebner’s journey undercover among different extremists group around the world. Neo-nazis to jihadists or radical anti-feminists, the reader will discover everything he/she has always wanted to know about extremists!

My review in short

Going Dark echoes one of the warnings in the documentary The Social Dilemma: the role played by social media in the spread of fake news and radicalisation. It is an extremely important book. I used to believe that I was safe from any extremist influence, I can’t be so sure anymore. It proved me wrong and turned out to be fascinating and eye-opening. Going Dark will not leave its reader indifferent.

THE GLOBE-TROTTER

A River In Darkness, by Masaji Ishikawa

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Human & Devastating

What is this book about?

A river in Darkness: One Man’s Escape from North Korea is the memoir of Masaji Ishikawa, a half-Korean half-Japanese man whose family left Japan to move to North Korea, hoping to find a better life.

My review in short

A river in Darkness is truly devastating. Revolting, inspiring, eye-opening, but so devastating. The contrast between the world of this book and my world really made me put things into perspective. But at some point, I really, too, started to feel hopeless for him. Even if I knew from the start -from the title of the book- that he’ll make it, that he’ll escape, I never stopped to be worried for him. This book will break its reader’s heart, but it will definitely be worth it.

THE AMBITIOUS ONE

Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Motivating & Insightful

This one is a special one since I haven’t read it myself: it’s directly (and strongly) recommended by my boyfriend! He got literally addicted to this one and read it faster than any other book…

What is this book about?

Outliers is a series of biographies of people who have become incredibly successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different?

His review in short

Outliers is a deeply interesting book. Malcolm Gladwell has nothing to prove anymore and this book can help you understand why. Addictive writing-style, great story-telling, lots of insights and a meaningful discovery about what makes special people so special.
